A community around every student

The Whānau system provides the foundation for pastoral care at BDSC, giving every student a smaller community within the wider College.

Students remain within their Whānau throughout their time at BDSC, helping them build strong relationships with students and staff who know and support them.

Each Whānau is led by a Whānau Leader, with Whānau Mentors and Tutors providing ongoing pastoral and academic support. They also provide an important point of connection between students, families and the College.

Need to contact your Whānau Leader?

Contact details for each of our six Whānau Leaders are available on our Our People page.

Someone to talk to

Students may seek support with:

The BDSC Counselling team supports the wellbeing and safety of students and provides a safe place to talk through difficulties or concerns.

Counselling is available to students across all year levels for a wide range of personal, home and school-related issues. Students do not need to be experiencing a crisis or be “in trouble” to speak with a counsellor.

BDSC counsellors are professionally trained and registered members of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors. Counselling is confidential, except where there is a serious and imminent risk to safety.

  • Difficulties at home or school
  • Anxiety or stress
  • Bullying
  • Loss and grief
  • Self-esteem
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Managing emotions
  • Other personal concerns
